"Exit Device" / "Classroom Function":
This is the main mechanism on the door. In a school setting, fire and building codes require doors to unlock and allow immediate egress (exit) during an emergency. The "classroom function" is a specific type of exit device that is:
Locked from the outside: Requires a key to enter.
Always free to exit from the inside: Pushing the bar or lever always unlocks the door and allows people to get out. This satisfies safety codes.
"Ergonomic Pull Handle":
This is the main part you grab. "Ergonomic" means it's designed to fit comfortably and naturally in your hand, making it easy to pull the door open after you've unlocked it.
"Thumbpiece":
This is the small lever you press with your thumb. Its job is to retract the latch (the part of the lock that holds the door closed).
"Pull And Thumbpiece":
This describes the two-step operation from the inside:
Your Thumb: You press the thumbpiece to retract the latch.
Your Hand: You then pull the ergonomic handle to open the door.
This is different from a classic "panic bar" where you simply push a large bar, which both retracts the latch and opens the door.
The Complete Sequence of Use:
From inside the classroom, a person would use this hardware as follows:
Grasp the ergonomic pull handle with your fingers.
Press the thumbpiece down with your thumb. (You will hear and feel the latch retract).
Pull the handle to open the door.
